Members of the Sunflower Family (Asteraceae) are starting to show up all over. I photographed this one on 5-19-09, and it is the Stemless Mock Goldenweed (
Stenotus acaulis). Other common names are short-stemmed stenotus and cushion stenotus. Characteristics include basal leaves that are small and long, one flower per short stem, and mat growth. Notice last year's dead leaves in the photo above.
It is found up to 11,000 feet, usually on dry, open, rocky places.
